It’s on! The SXSW Panel Picker is open until September 4th, and we need your vote to help us get our sessions on the schedule. Big things happen at SXSW…cool fact, Twitter was unveiled and launched at SXSW 2006…everything’s big in Texas! So take a couple of seconds, make sure you LOG IN and vote for ROWE and coworking! We owe ya!

Results-Only Work Environment: Why It Works
Imagine a work environment where people do whatever they want whenever they want as long as the work gets done. At midnight or 3am or on Sunday. Whenever and wherever. It’s called a Results-Only Work Environment (ROWE), and companies around the world are starting to adopt the ROWE philosophy.

We put this together with Cali Ressler and Jody Thompson (http://caliandjody.com/blog/), creators of ROWE and authors of “Why Work Sucks, and How to Fix It.” Cali and Jody are helping companies quickly revolutionize the workplace, including our sister companies Meddius and Intalgent. Since January 2009, we’ve been more productive, more balanced, and quite frankly, much more sane! ROWE has been a huge positive change for each company, and we want to spread the word!

    The Ecosystem of Coworking
Coworking is revolutionizing the way we work. With spaces popping up in cities internationally, there are many different conceptual models finding success. This panel will discuss each of these models, how they best serve their customers, and how coworking is supporting the change in the traditional work environment.

This panel is definitely going to be a group effort! We want to break down the different types of coworking spaces, how they work and lessons they’ve learned. So, we gathered a pretty impressive group of coworking leaders. This panel so far features Alex Hillman, Independents Hall, Tony Bacigalupo, New Work City (see previous post on Mayor Bloomburg for some cool New Work City news), Jerome Chang, BLANKSPACES, Todd O’Neill, C4Workspace, and OpenSpace!

SXSW Interactive is March 12-15, 2010 in Austin, TX. SXSW Interactive features five days of compelling presentations from the brightest minds in emerging technology, scores of exciting networking events hosted by industry leaders and an unbeatable line up of special programs showcasing the best new websites, video games and startup ideas the community has to offer. It also happens to be THE meet-up hub for coworking spaces around the country.

    Vote friends, vote!

    Charlottesville beCamp 2009, May 8th and 9th!

As the site says, “Think of it as an open-source geek gathering where you get to decide what goes into and what comes out of the event. It’s 2 days of creating, collaborating, and conversing with people just as juiced excited about technology as you are.” What a cool concept, and we certainly did get a lot out of it! Last night’s casual event helped us meet local IT professionals we’ve been talking to and listening to on Twitter and Facebook. Great to finally put faces to usernames and avatars! This morning, we participated in a very informative session on Entrepreneurship, followed by a session led on ROWE and the concept of coworking. While not meant to be an hour of self-promotion, we appreciate the sincere interest in OpenSpace. We learned so much more about the tech community’s needs and will work to integrate the ideas shared into our business plan and offerings. As for ROWE, it sounds like a lot of local companies already have different levels of the type of work environment that ROWE offers…it’s refreshing to know that companies are appreciating work/life balance and that a happy employee actually increases productivity.

Thanks to organizers Eric Pugh and Jeff Vogelsang, all volunteers, participants and sponsors for a really cool event!

OpenSpace is definitely taking shape…check out the link above for a live webcam of construction on our new building. OpenSpace will take the first floor of the building, with floor to ceiling windows. The webcam, posted by local Charlottesville general contractor Martin Horn, captures the action and refreshes every 60 seconds.

So, we recently came across a great new concept called a Results-Only Work Environment.   Created by consultants Cali Ressler and Jody Thomson (culturerx.com) ROWE means that people do whatever they want, whenever they want, as long as the work gets done. That’s right…you read this correctly. In a ROWE, you are in charge of your professional and personal destinies. According to their book Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It,

“Suddenly, work isn’t a place you go, it’s a thing you do. In a ROWE, there are no mandatory meetings or fixed schedules. You stop doing any activity that wastes time, and nobody criticizes for you “leaving early” or “coming in late.” If you do your best work at midnight or on Sundays, go for it!”

You manage your time, your work projects, and your personal errands in a manner that makes your day more efficient and productive. With our “always-on” global economy, we have the technology to work outside normal business hours and spaces.

We get it! And, what a perfect concept to promote as a coworking space.
